*~*~*~*

If I was not myself
And you were someone else
I'd say so much to you
And I would tell the truth

*~*~*~*

He didn't even remember who he was at the time.

He had temporarily disposed of the note, after all.

It had all been a plan, you see. To convince L of his innocence. To clear his name and then strike. To dispose of those in his way, loitering on the pathway to his throne as the god of a New World.

However, his plan hadn't gone as he thought it would. No, not at all.

Light Yagami had joined the Kira investigation, only to find that there were not one, but two ingenious detectives hunting him down. L and (letter of your choice).

He had planned to wipe them out as if they were only a small stain on his pure white canvas. But when they caught themselves up in his life, he found that letting go was a little too difficult for his taste. For one of the two siblings, at least.

*~*~*~*

'Cause I can hardly breathe
When your hands let go of me
The ice is thinning out
And my feet brace themselves

*~*~*~*

It had all started out as a small, innocent admiration.

(Letter), or (nickname), as she insisted the members of the investigation called her, was an amazing detective with skills that challenged even her brother L's. Unlike him though, she dressed and acted somewhat normally, explaining that it was to fit in to society and to be overlooked.

Light didn't understand the last part, because he simply couldn't imagine that how to overlook someone like her.

Intelligent. Strong. Loyal. Stubborn. Persistent. Sweet one second but serious the next. Light couldn't read her mind at all. She was unpredictable and cautious.

That made him want to get to know her more. It triggered some sort of desire to have her all to himself.

At the time, he didn't see a problem with falling in love. He didn't have any trouble accepting his fantasies.

Because he had forgotten who he was.

*~*~*~*

I'm there in the water
Still looking for you
I'm there in the water
Can't you see?

Can't you see?

*~*~*~*

“Hey, (nickname)?”

“Yes? Do you need something Light-kun?"

Though (y/n) made an effort to dress and act normally in public areas, she saw no reason to do so while in headquarters. She sat in the same odd position as her brother and wore an overly baggy (favourite show) shirt. She did considerably keep her socks on and changed clothes every day, but nonetheless, it was quite obvious that she and L were siblings when her true nature emerged from behind the stereotypical girl hair and clothes.

As her black office chair slowly turned to face the boy, he noticed how the dark glow of the room lit up her facial features.

Light shoved his hands into his pant pockets. “Would you like to, uh--"

(Y/n) finished his sentence. “--Go out on a date? That's what you were about to ask, am I correct?”

“W-Well yes,” replied Light, once again surprised by how easily (letter) could read people. “How can you tell?”

“Your posture is stiff, you're averting eye contact, blushing, and your body is constantly changing position. Basic body language,” she explained while pulling at a piece of her hair, something Light had noticed helped her think clearly. “Plus, I've noticed that you watch me quite a bit.”

Light then felt a sharp tug on his wrist, the one that bore a chained bracelet he had completely forgotten about.

“Hey,” said L suddenly from behind Light. “You know we're still handcuffed together right? And I'm not crazy about the idea of my sister going in a date with a possible serial killer.”

Light sighed. “I've told you this before, Ryuzaki. I'm not Kira. I think I'd remember killing someone.”

Ryuzaki ignored him. A tense silence made it's way into the atmosphere.

“Say, Light,” began (nickname), shattering the absence of sound with her questioning voice. “Aren't you dating Misa?”

“Uh, it's a one-sided thing,” explained Light nervously. “I'm not that into her but I don't want to hurt her feelings.”

“You'd be doing so by going out on a date with me,” (nickname) pointed out.

Light exhaled loudly and pinched the bridge of his nose. She was always so difficult to convince of anything. She always remembered the little things. But he loved that about her.

Instead of arguing, he simply replied. “Yeah, I know that. But I actually like you.”

*~*~*~*

You've seen this all before
A life left on the shore
We're smiling all the same
You sail away again

*~*~*~*

Light had been thoroughly enjoying (nickname)'s company as the days unfolded, one after another.

The two-- well, technically the three-- sometimes went out for coffee. Although Ryuzaki was always staring creepily at the pair and constantly eating inhuman amounts of sweets, everything seemed pretty normal.

It was all like an average teenage love story, except between an unemotional detective and her unknowing rival. But, of course, neither was aware of the mess they had gotten themselves into.

It was like some sort of twisted version of Romeo and Juliet. The only thing was, they weren't exactly star-crossed lovers. Light and (nickname) were enemies, yet through a calm solace, they began falling in love.

Isn't fate artistic?

*~*~*~*

I'm there in the water
Still looking for you

He remembered. He remembered everything.

From the moment his fingertips had grazed the surface of the notebook, innocently hoping to investigate it thoroughly and finding Kira, Light's memory had returned.

He was Kira. He was the one that L struggled to catch. He was the one who had slipped through the police force's fingertips. He was the god of the New World. He would change everything.

His personality changed. His intentions changed. His demeanour changed.

However, one thing didn't change as dramatically. His admiration for (nickname) remained, as powerful as ever.

But it was tainted. It was twisted. She became more of an obsession, one that was slowly tearing Light apart.

And when L removed Light's handcuffs, it was as if nothing could hold him back anymore. He was free to chase her, to take her, to steal her, to claim what was rightfully his.

Light wanted to be the god of the New World. He wanted to overthrow L's universe, one that was filled with evildoers, hateful people, and criminals that deserved to be punished. They deserved to die.

But with L and (letter) after him, there was no way that that would happen.

So Light came up with a plan. He would take advantage of (nickname) and slowly squeeze her into a throne above the New World, where she could rule with him, where they could be Justice together. She would bring her brother down for him. He'd make her.

After all, he was all she would ever need.

And if that wasn't true, he'd make it so.

*~*~*~*

Oh yeah, I'm dead in the water
Still looking for you
I'm dead in the water
Can't you see?

Can't you see?

*~*~*~*

Light knocked on (letter)'s door. Once. Twice. Thrice.

He had woken up earlier than usual and found a sudden urge to ask (nickname) a question, one that would influence his plan completely. It was the question that determined if he had to force (letter) to join him or if she'd willingly follow him.

By pressing his ear against the wooden door's smooth surface, Light heard someone groan in annoyance, the creaking of a bed as the person stood, and their reluctant footsteps toward the door. He hastily hopped away from it, as to not frighten his precious little (nickname).

The entrance swung open, revealing an indecently-dressed (nickname). Her small figure was adorned by only a pair of pyjama shorts and one of her brother's spare baggy white shirts. Her hair was tousled and knotted, as if she'd only woken up a few minutes ago.

Spotting Light, she let out a sigh. “What do you need, Light? It's far too early for a trip to the coffee shop.”

Light approached her so their figures were only inches apart. He caught a whiff of her intoxicating scent and took a deep breath.

“(Nickname),” he began slowly, voice wavering slightly at his next words. “Do you love me?”

(Letter) raised a questioning eyebrow from behind her tangled (h/c) mess of hair. “Why such a personal question at this time of day?”

Light took a second to check his watch, something he hadn't done in his haste to see his beloved goddess. It was 2:37 in the morning. No wonder (nickname) looked so sleepy.

“I just have to k-know,” Light replied too quickly.

“Are you alright, Light-kun? This isn't like you,” remarked (letter).

Losing his patience, Light half-shouted, “DO YOU LOVE ME, (NICKNAME)?!?”

Taken aback by this, the short girl took a step back, eyes wide, yet still calculating. Her mouth was open, but sound came out.

Light decided that she did. She had to. After all, they were meant to be together, right?

He ignored the fact that their positions said otherwise. He left out the part that said that there was no way that their ending would be happy, since they were two people placed in this world to be enemies.

Light pulled her body close to his own, taking advantage of her shocked and paralyzed state. He let out an airy sigh, burying his nose in (nickname)'s soft (h/c) locks. This was as it should be, in his mind. They were to rule the world together, to make new rules, to build a society free of all evil.

“Light.” (Letter)'s sweet, velvety voice interrupted his fantasy.

“Hm?”

“I-I do love you.”

Neither knew that one was playing with the other.

Light and (nickname) were considered as a couple by everyone around them, reluctantly so by L. However, no one knew what was really happening behind the sweet hugs and sneaky hints of admiration.

(Letter) had responded positively to Light's confession to get information from him, but deep down, she did love him. Light had confessed to (nickname) out of desire to morph her into an image that his twisted mind demanded, one that belonged to him, one that removed everything in his way. Both wanted something other than love, yet they weren't entirely faking it.

This was a battle of the wits lit up by romantic candles, this was a risked waltz on a tightrope where neither knew if they actually wanted to catch the other or not.

Both knew that someone would slip up eventually. Both knew that someone would fall down and forget to be caught. Because that's just how these two were made to be. Enemies. Rivals. One couldn't live while the other remained.

But at the same time, one couldn't imagine living when the other died.

She was gone. He felt like he was too.

Before Rem killed Watari and L, she realized that (letter) also posed a threat to Misa's safety, to her beloved human's survival. So, she made a point of finishing both siblings off.

This hadn't been part of Light's plan. No, not at all.

The look of horror in (nickname)'s eyes when her brother collapsed from his odd sitting position sent involuntary needles through Light's heart. Without hesitating, the girl lunged toward Ryuzaki and caught him in her fragile arms, the pair falling to the ground with a loud thud.

“Hey! Hey!” she repeated, every time louder and more frantic than the last. “L! Ryu! S-snap out of it! Please, Lawli--”

That was when the Death Note took effect on her. She collapsed, her body paralyzed by a sudden heart attack. Her eyes were open, but no emotion remained. Empty sockets with uncoloured orbs gently placed inside slowly shut as she took her last fleeting glimpse of the world. She lay sprawled over her beloved brother's corpse when Light took her in his arms.

Surprisingly, even to himself, Light didn't feel accomplished by her death. Though her brother's was an entirely different case, the boy felt something snapped as her observed her lifeless figure, her skin a deathly pale shade, her eyes forever closed.

Then he screamed.

Again and again.

People saw Kira as a heartless individual, incapable of loving, incapable of even feeling. Even if they knew that he had been with her, they wouldn't take it as love. A devious plan, they'd call it. An intelligent use of a poor girl's emotions.

They were half right. But they'd always leave out the most important part.

Light Yagami did love that girl. He loved her too much.

As he felt himself being torn away from her useless corpse, Light found that he knew this happened. He knew that he'd always held on to the false hope of their life together above everyone else.

Still, he thought that maybe, just maybe, this could’ve worked out. If only she wasn't herself. If only he was someone else.

But that was only a fantasy.

I have no idea if this is good or not, to be completely honest.

This is just a stress-fic. I am extremely busy these days and can't wait for school to be over heh.

Anyways, I hope this was acceptable because writing it enormously helped my stress levels :la:.

It felt weird writing for Light since I'm an L lover huehue sorry Yagami-kun. :iconpervylplz:

I don't own Death Note or any of it's characters or plot.
